Matt Kerwood Don’t always believe what you hear …
Over the last 18 months we have been bombarded with messages on the economy with constant reminders on how deep this recession has become. The media is very good at focussing on the negatives which is why I wanted to take a reality check.
If you talk to other business contacts you may get a more balanced picture. I know from experience that here at NBI many of the companies we deal with have met the recession head on and are looking for better ways of doing business. They have a drive to adapt and succeed irrespective of the economic climate.
The best example I can give is the growth in our office relocations and refurbishments side of the business. We have seen a significant growth in this area and from a number of different sectors including construction, health and professional.
  The work has ranged from designing and building a completely new layout to re-designing an existing location to make better use of the space. Clients have been pleasantly surprised about how much more they can comfortably fit into a restricted space.
  But it’s not just companies we work with directly. If you talk to business contacts it seems that everybody is finding it tougher but I think that’s because key big decisions are being made on a more regular basis. Those who make the right calls today will continue to grow and expand tomorrow.

The decor and ambiance within an office environment are just as critical as the layout – particularly when you consider how much of our time is spent at work. This hasn’t gone unnoticed at NBI which is why last year we successfully expanded our business into supplying high quality office furniture.
Knowing what you need and how it might look can delay the decision to spruce up an office space. So we have made it very easy with our planning and design service to enable you to see the furniture in situ.
Delivery isn’t a barrier either as we have made this free and within 7 days of your order being placed, where stock is available. Where necessary, experienced installers will unpack the furniture, set it up and remove all the wastage – so you don’t need to worry about anything once it does arrive.
If you are still not sure you want to make a commitment without ‘test driving’ the furniture, we have a specialist showroom set-up in London and Reigate. All you need to do is make an appointment via the websiteand we will be pleased to give you a guided tour.
Our most recent addition is a 350 page colour brochure displaying our full product range as well as example layouts. There are also a number of products available exclusively through the website so go online now.
New Health Sector

Health Sector In recent months we have completed two projects that have demonstrated our ability to move into new business sectors. The health sector is not somewhere we had worked in previously but we now have experience of both the NHS and private health systems..
The first project was part of a £1million project for an existing hospital area to create a new GP drop-in clinic. During the project the existing GP clinic needed to remain open so we had to manage the re-fit around doctors and patients. This required a large degree of flexibility and creativity sometimes with work plans having to be changed in the morning before the days work could commence.
Our second project was to refurbish vacant premises in the West End of London to provide a skin treatment clinic. Managing the project meant we dealt with the Local Authority Approval process which enabled the client to get on with their job.

Making the most of your space
Shaking up the office
Office There is little doubt that in the current business environment changing the way we work has become a consistent theme. But knowing that changes need to be made whilst understanding how to go about finding a solution can be quite difficult. Sometimes you can’t always envisage how office space and location can be re-organised.

This very situation arose in two projects that we have just completed.  Talking to our clients and understanding what they wanted meant that we could design a plan from scratch, discuss the detail and agree the solution.

The first project was for a company based in Kingston-upon-Thames.  They had two offices on either side of the same street and wanted to consolidate their operation into the one office. Jamie Oliver had already expressed an interest in one of the sites for a restaurant.  We were able to redesign and reshape the remaining office to accommodate 25 more people, something which wasn’t felt possible to achieve at the outset.
Weekend work and tight timescales were the critical elements in the second project. We needed to relocate an office during non office hours to ensure service and functionality were not compromised. After two weekends the office was up and running on the Monday morning.

Achieving membership of Constructionline
Making the standard
NBI has recently achieved membership of the online procurement organisation known as Constructionline (www.constructionline.co.uk ). The UK’s largest register for pre-qualified contractors and consultants it has over 18,000 suppliers and 8,000 buyers benefiting from the services they offer.
Members have to undertake a rigorous pre-qualification vetting procedure before being accepted on the supplier list. Buyers can then source a suitable supplier knowing that this procedure has already been undertaken for them. The key benefits being a streamlined procurement process which means saving time, money and hassle for all the parties involved.
