Change of use...
Wine and Spirit Education Trust
The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) was founded in 1969 to provide high quality training and education in wines and spirits. In addition to courses and qualifications for those in the ‘trade’ they have an increasing number of consumers and enthusiasts who attend courses.
Based near London Bridge NBI were asked to design and refurbish an existing office space and turn it into a new wine tasting venue to support the many courses and qualification programmes they run.
Working together closely we designed the new layout and assisted with the choice of finishes. The project included removal of partitions, reconfiguring the power, data and lighting sources, installing suspended ceilings, creating new kitchen facilities, new glass partitions, fitting Muraspec sculptured panels and a complete redecoration.
A functional office space was transformed into an upmarket tasting venue for students to enjoy. Karen Douglas from WSET had this to say about the project “Excellent work, high quality finish, I would recommend to use again”.

News Round Up
A couple of projects have been keeping us busy since our last newsletter. The first involved a move from Princess Gate in London to Kensington Square for Zakham Construction. We needed to design a new space for the ground floor area to provide staff and conference room functionality.
The plans were all approved last month and we are now in the process of fitting out the area with glass partitions, electrics, data, conference room, window blinds as well as kitchen and toilet facilities.
Our second project has been equally exciting for an independent media company based in Hampshire. Koch Media had used us previously and with their own business expanding successfully they needed to accommodate more staff.
The redesign of the office space coincided with the launch of their new ‘hit’ computer game ‘Dead Island’. As a result we also needed to create a meeting room and spruce up the reception area.
We relocated the office furniture over a single weekend whilst carrying out data and power alterations to service the new desk layout. The reception area was enlarged and designed to incorporate a new meeting area. We installed silicone joined glass walls with manifestations, new furniture and a digital wall covering in the meeting room.
Feedback from Koch Media has been very positive and it’s certainly one of the more creative installations we have completed. Here are a couple of pictures so you can see for yourself.

Staying at home ...
Matt Kerwood Many of my friends and colleagues have either taken a holiday in the UK this summer or not gone away and spent their money improving their homes. This must be a sure sign that we are in the middle of a recession but either of these options fills me with optimism.
Staying at home, to holiday or improve your property, can only be seen as good for our economy – helping us on the road to recovery.
Looking closer to home and improving what you already have is something we are frequently asked to consider. It’s not about throwing out the old and starting with a blank page but more using what customers have and making it work harder.
Whether it is a retail store or office environment, making it a place where you want to visit or work makes commercial sense. My sentiments exactly – when we holiday across the British Isles or spend money improving our personal space it fuels our economic recovery.
On a final note I just wanted to thank everyone who entered our recent website competition – the winner has been notified and a case of wine despatched.
Refurbishing old buildings

Potential ‘money pits’
You may have experience or know somebody who has owned an older property. If so, you will also be familiar with the phrase ‘it’s a money pit’. Many organisations and retailers reside in older established properties, particularly if they are on the high street. A challenge we are often faced with is to make them feel fresh and modern. On the surface this seems like a simple request but here are just a few of the areas to bear in mind when embarking on a refit of this nature:
Disposal of hazardous waste such as asbestos
Electrical test to check if circuits meet regulations and rewiring if they don’t
Planning and listed building constraints
Undertaking a sensitive refurbishment in keeping with the character of the building
If people are working in other parts of the building ensuring their environment is not compromised
It is possible and realistic to refit an old existing building without going to the expense of purchasing a new unit and potentially forsaking a prime retail spot.
